The physical, chemical and optical characteristics between a synthetic diamond and a natural diamond are the same. Synthetic diamonds are not "false", these are "real" diamonds, but they are created artificially in a laboratory.
BAUNAT does not offer synthetic diamonds, not even on request, since natural diamonds have a much higher emotional and financial value.
Synthetic diamonds can also be accompanied by a certificate and can be sold by jewelers. Note that the naked eye cannot distinguish natural stones from artificial ones.
Ways of manufacturing synthetic diamonds
There are two ways of creating synthetic diamonds. These methods aim to reproduce the conditions in which diamonds are naturally formed underground, before rising to the surface through lava flows in volcanic regions.
HPHT (high pressure, high temperature). With this method, the crystallization is induced artificially in a sealed chamber in which is placed a pure form of graphite powder.
CVD (for vapor deposition). With this second way, a diamond substrate or a synthetic diamond obtained through the HPTH method is used forming some kind of graphitic powder.
Fake diamonds and synthetic diamonds
Fake diamonds should not be confused with synthetic diamonds. Artificial diamonds are actually real diamonds, but they are man-made with industrial means. Physical, chemical and optical characteristics are identical to those that are diamond mine extracted.
Meanwhile fake diamonds are stones with different physical and chemical characteristics from natural diamond. They can be visually confused with natural diamonds. That is why, in case of doubt about the authenticity of a stone, it’s always best to consult with a gemologist.
The impact of synthetic diamonds on the jewellery market
The African continent supplies 60% of global production of rough diamonds. In ten African countries like Congo, Angola, South Africa, Namibia or Sierra Leone, the diamond industry is one of the main resources.
The Gem & Jewellry Export Promotion Council association estimated that annual production of synthetic diamonds would be around the 350.000 carats per year, against 150 million carats for natural rough diamonds.
In comparison, synthetic diamonds are advantageous because they are sold cheaper than natural diamonds. Their steady production rise concerns the ONG, the world's leading producer of rough diamonds in Africa.
However, as experience shows, buying a diamond is often performed for emotional reasons. The customer is therefore willing to pay the price of the rarity and authenticity.
Indeed, artificial diamonds do not represent the experience which one is expected to live when buying a diamond for a special occasion. An artificial diamond does not have the soul of a real diamond. In this sense, a diamond is a unique stone that aims at being valuable, authentic, natural and truthful.
BAUNAT DIAMONDS is committed to offering only natural diamonds. Moreover, each diamond comes with a certificate of authenticity.
